Doing cardio first thing on an empty stomach is something I got from Hugo Rivera and the BRE plan and I know it works. I used to drive to the gym in the morning and do 30 minutes of elliptical, which is still, hands-down, the best cardio I know of. You can burn SO many calories in 30 minutes it's insane. However, when you tack 20 minutes of drive time on to each side and add a few more for walking into the gym, walking out of the gym, refilling bottles, going to the bathroom, etc, you're looking at 90 - 120 minutes for that 30 minute shot. That's why I stopped. One of my options, of course, is to get an elliptical for home, but the only ones worth a damn are the commercial grade ones that start at $2000. And those are the ones that lack features. They're just good, solid machines. for a feature-rich, solid commercial elliptical, you might be able to get a used one for $2500. So, that is a pipe dream or a long term goal. Not sure which.
